Budapest is a charming city on the banks of the Danube River. Settled by various sects since prehistoric times, Budapest has always been an important city. Today it's one of the largest cities in Europe, drawing tens of thousands of tourists each year. The Danube River runs through the Buda and Pest regions, separating the city into two parts. The city is home to iconic neo-gothic architecture, historic landmarks, and bridges. In 1987, UNESCO declared the city, including the River Danube, a World Heritage Site.
Danube River: The Danube is the second-longest river in Europe. Flowing through 10 countries, the river that originates in Germany flows 2,850 kilometers before reaching the Black Sea. Budapest is not the only world-famous city that lies on the banks of the river; Vienna in Austria is also birthed by the Danube. Danube River Cruises are the best way to experience the magic of the Danube and the city of Budapest.

Budapest is an iconic city. One of the biggest cities in Europe and a World Heritage Site, its buildings and ancient landmarks have never failed to inspire travelers. From beautiful bridges to grand castles, here are some of the attractions you will visit on your Danube River Cruise.
The Széchenyi Chain Bridge, popularly known as Chain Bridge, is built across the Danube River. Opened in 1849, it was the first permanent bridge connecting the Buda and Pest sides. An architectural marvel, it was often regarded as a symbol of the city. Named after István Széchenyi, a revered Hungarian Statesman, the bridge was designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark and constructed by Scottish engineer Adam Clark. Today the wrought-iron chain suspension bridge is an important monument and tourist site.
Margaret Bridge is noted for its unusual three-way design. The bridge connects Buda and Pest while also linking Margaret Island. Designed by French engineer Ernest Goüin, the construction of the bridge commenced in 1872 and was completed in 1876 and stretches across a length of 607.5 meters. In 2009 the Bridge was renovated to give it a new look, and today it is a very famous landmark in Budapest.
Margaret Island is a tourist hotspot in the middle of the River Danube. The 2.5 kilometers Island can be accessed via Margaret Bridge and Árpád Bridge. It is a famous recreational area in the city with promenades, cycle paths, and picnic spots inside the Island. It also houses ruins dating back to the Middle Ages. Margaret Island is known for its parks, swimming pools, and musical fountains.
Vigado Square in the Pest side of Budapest is a busy corner of the city. Here you will find the iconic concert hall Vigadó. The Concert Hall was damaged more than one time during wars, last renovated in 2014. The newest attraction in the area is the statue, Little Princess. Sitting on the fence separating the promenade and tram line, the Little Princess statue is a famous backdrop for tourist photos.
The Hungarian parliament is a palatial neo-gothic style building on the banks of the River Danube, located on the Pest side of the city. Opened in 1902, it's the largest building in Hungary and a very popular tourist destination. The building has 691 rooms, and at 96 meters in height, it is one of the tallest buildings in the country. Inside the Central Hall of Parliament is where the Holy Crown of Hungary is kept.
For the best panoramic views of Budapest, you should visit Fisherman's Bastion, established in 1851. It is one of the most well-known buildings in Budapest, located near Buda Castle. Built in the Neo-Romanesque style, the building's main facade is 140 meters long. The Bastion was first built in the 1700s and guarded by the guild of local fishermen, hence the name Fisherman's Bastion.
One of the most stunning palaces in all Europe, Buda Castle, belonged to the Hungarian Royalty. It is also known as the Royal Palace and Royal Castle. A majestic expression of baroque-style architecture, the grand palace today is a World Heritage Site. It is home to the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. First built in 1265, the Castle was renovated in 1749 and 1769. During World War II, the Castle was almost destroyed, but thanks to restoration efforts, it retained its beauty.
